The Dutch gambling authority, Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), has announced that it is intensifying efforts to combat illegal gambling apps that operate without a license and pose a significant threat to consumers. According to the regulator, the issue is becoming increasingly serious, as such apps are easily accessible—especially to vulnerable groups, including minors.

The KSA highlights that these applications are often promoted in digital environments and employ deceptive practices, such as using branding that closely resembles that of licensed operators. In some cases, the apps simulate completely unrelated functionalities but redirect users to unregulated gambling websites after installation.

KSA has stated that consumer reporting plays a key role in tackling this issue. When reporting suspicious apps, it is essential that users include the exact name of the app in question. This information helps the regulator take follow-up actions and enforcement measures. So far this year, KSA has successfully lobbied for the removal of 20 illegal gambling apps from major mobile app stores.

The regulator also notes it is working actively with relevant authorities and using established mechanisms to remove identified illegal applications.

Illegal gambling undermines transparency, endangers consumer rights, and compromises the efforts of licensed participants in the sector. These practices provide no protection to users, lack responsible gambling mechanisms, and carry serious risks such as fraud, misuse of personal data, and addiction.

The Association of Gaming Industry in Bulgaria (AGIB) stresses that combating the illegal gambling sector remains a top priority and requires consistent institutional oversight and active public engagement.
