He emphasized that while Bulgaria has <strong>25 licensed gambling operators<\/strong> and <strong>46 issued online gambling licenses<\/strong>, the primary concern is not the financial loss to the national budget but rather the <strong>social consequences<\/strong> of unregulated gambling. He highlighted that <strong>minors and unregistered individuals<\/strong> are the most vulnerable victims of illegal gambling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are witnessing a <strong>doubling<\/strong> of websites engaged in illegal online gambling,\u201d Petkov stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a follow-up interview with <strong>Pogled Info<\/strong>, Petkov criticized the lack of institutional and media focus on the issue, describing illegal gambling as a <strong>serious threat to society<\/strong>. He acknowledged that while recent measures against illegal gambling are <strong>justified<\/strong>, they have also led to a <strong>rise in unauthorized platforms<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Petkov further explained that <strong>legally registered gambling activities are subject to strict medical and financial oversight<\/strong>, ensuring player protection. Licensed operators must maintain <strong>comprehensive documentation<\/strong> and take measures to safeguard users in cases of <strong>financial distress<\/strong> or <strong>excessive losses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe inaction of both the state and the European institutions, coupled with the absence of a unified regulatory framework to combat illegal gambling, is alarming,\u201d Petkov noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to him, illegal gambling is a <strong>well-organized criminal network<\/strong> with two primary objectives \u2013 <strong>corruption and organized crime<\/strong>. The <strong>United Left coalition<\/strong> is committed to addressing this issue by <strong>strengthening prevention and educational programs in schools<\/strong>. Petkov assured that efforts will focus on tackling this <strong>systemic problem<\/strong>, which he described as not only Bulgarian but also <strong>pan-European<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA battle against illegal gambling is ahead, and it won\u2019t be fought solely in Europe.
